Nexium (esomeprazole) is a prescription drug which is prescribed to reduce acid in the stomach. It is most often prescribed to treat patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn; acid reflux), ulcers and erosive esophagitis.
Acid reflux is caused by the overproduction of stomach acid, which can then creep up the lower end of the esophagus and cause symptoms such as heart burn or acid reflux.
There are some commonly known high-acid foods which you should try and avoid if you suffer from GERD, acid reflux or persistent heartburn: Coffees and sodas, foods with red sauces, citrus fruits, tomatoes, pizza, pepperonis and any high-acid food or beverage.
This drug works by decreasing the production of acid in the stomach.
If you have ever been afraid to eat certain foods because of that horrible feeling of heartburn you get afterwards, then you already know how great the advantages of taking Nexium are. Nobody wants to live with persistent and painful heartburn, and Nexium offers you way to control your acid reflux and eliminate the symptoms.
It is very important the you disclose to your doctor any and ALL medications that you are currently taking, even if you purchased them over-the-counter at a local drugstore, in order to avoid any potential complications or drug interactions from occurring. Some people may not be able to take Nexium including: women who are nursing, those who currently suffer from live disease and people who are currently taking medications containing the following drugs may not be able to take Nexium: digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, and Femiron).
