Prevacid (lansoprazole) is a powerful anti-acid medication that is used to treat persistent heartburn, acid reflux and stomach ulcers.
What causes Heart Burn?
Heartburn is caused by the stomach producing too much acid, which can then backup into the lower end of the esophagus and cause the symptoms associated with heartburn or acid reflux.
Foods to avoid with GERD:
If you suffer from acid reflux there are some foods that you will generally want to avoid in order to lessen the chances of getting heartburn, they include:
- Red sauces
- High-acid foods
- Coffees and sodas
- Citrus fruits and tomatoes
- Alcohol
How does Prevacid Work?
This drug is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) it works to suppress the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
Differences between Prevacid and Nexium?
There is not a whole lot of difference between these two anti-acid prescription medications, with the exception to the side effects and the drug interactions that can occur. Prevacid can be taken with most drugs and with minimal to no drug, while Nexium has a specific list of drugs that cannot be taken in conjunction with it.
Side effects to Prevacid Include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Dizziness
- Headache
- In rare cases an allergic reaction can occur which may involve the following symptoms: swelling of the lips, tongue or face, closing of the throat and hives. If you experience any of these rare yet dangerous allergic reactions, STOP taking Prevacid and seek immediate medical treatment
What Medications Interact with Prevacid:
There are some medications that can interact with Prevacid, make sure that you tell your doctor about any and ALL drugs that you are currently taking in order to avoid experiencing any interactions. Let your doctor know if you are currently taking medications containing Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), and iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron), as they can interact with this drug.
