How Should I Take Tamiflu?
You should only take Tamiflu as directed by your doctor. Tamiflu is not a cure for the flu, rather a method of treatment and prevention. Tamiflu only works effectively against the flu when taken within 48-hours of the first signs of symptoms. You can prevent the flu using Tamiflu but you need to take it as soon as you think that you may have come into contact with another infected person. Tamiflu can be take on a full or an empty stomach but it is recommended that it be taken after a meal.
- In order to prevent the flu, Tamiflu should be taken by mouth once daily, for ten days
- In order to treat the flu, Tamiflu should be taken by mouth once daily, for five days
- Your Physician may recommend a different dosage level, which all depend on your weight and your age
How does Tamiflu Work?
The flu virus relies upon a protein that lives on it called neuraminidase—which allows the virus to break through the cell walls and successfully multiply as the virus works its way through the system infecting other cells. Tamiflu targets and inhibits this neuraminidase protein, not allowing the flu virus to break the cell walls, confining it and ultimately causing the virus to die.
Side effects to Tamiflu Include:
While there have not been very many commonly reported side effects from taking Tamiflu, there are some side effects that can occur when you take this drug. Always consult with you doctor prior to taking any prescription drug to make sure that it is the right drug for you.

- In rare cases, children taking Tamiflu experienced delirium, children should be monitored when taking Tamiflu
- In rare cases, a skin reaction or allergic reaction occurred which may be potentially life-threatening—seek immediate medical attention if you experience this
Who Should Not Take Tamiflu?
Tamiflu will work wonderfully for most people who take this drug to treat the symptoms of their flu. However it may not be right for all people. Those who are pregnant, expecting or currently nursing can not take Tamiflu. As well as those who are currently suffering from lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease or those who are not deemed healthy enough by their doctor to take Tamiflu. Always consult with your doctor to make sure that you are able to take Tamiflu.
What Medications Interact with Tamiflu?
While there are not many known interactions with Tamiflu, you always want to make sure and tell your doctor about all the drugs you are currently taking. Including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, ointments and topical salves, this way you can best avoid any potential drug interactions. Tamiflu has not yet had studies conducted as to whether or not it is safe to take with other flu medications. Do not take Tamiflu in association with any other flu medication as the results, interactions and side effects—if any—are still unknown.
